Add berries, mint, juice, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker, and gently muddle. Top with rum and ½ cup ice cubes. Cover and shake vigorously until very cold, about 30 seconds.
Pour into an old fashioned glass filled one-third full with ice. Top with club soda.
