Bacon-Apple Turkey Burgers

Ingredients

  • 6 slices bacon
  • ¼ cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 red apple, peeled and finely chopped
  • ¾ tsp garlic salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • 2 lb ground turkey
  • 2 Tbsp chopped fresh basil
  • 6 hamburger buns, toasted

Instructions

  1. Cook bacon in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat 5 minutes or until crisp; drain, reserving drippings in skillet.
  2. Finely crumble bacon.
  3. Sauté onion, apple, garlic salt and pepper in hot drippings 7 minutes or until apple is soft; remove from heat, and cool.
  4. Preheat grill to medium-high heat.
  5. Combine ground turkey, basil, onion mixture and bacon in a bowl; shape into 10 (½-inch-thick) patties.
  6. Place patties on a grill rack coated with cooking spray.
  7. Grill patties, covered with grill lid, 5 to 6 minutes per side or until centers are no longer pink.
  8. Serve 6 patties on buns with desired condiments. Reserve remaining patties for another meal.

Side Dish Ingredients

  • 4 sweet potatoes, peeled
  • 2 egg whites
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp salt

Side Dish Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Coat 2 large baking sheets with cooking spray.
  2. Slice each potato into 12 wedges.
  3. Lightly beat egg whites, ginger, cinnamon, and salt until foamy.
  4. Add potatoes, and toss to completely coat; arrange in a single layer on baking sheets.
  5. Bake 20 minutes; turn wedges, and bake 15 to 20 minutes longer or until tender and browned.
