Tomatillo Bloody Mary

Ingredients

  • 1 lb green tomatoes, quartered
  • 1 lb tomatillos, husked, washed, and quartered
  • 1 serrano pepper, halved lengthwise
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro leaves
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 3 Tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 2 tsp prepared horseradish
  • 2 tsp hot sauce
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • Pinch of ground cumin
  • 1½ cups vodka
  • 1 cup sparkling mineral water, chilled
  • Garnishes: celery sticks, serrano peppers, fresh cilantro sprigs, lime wedges

Instructions

  1. Preheat broiler. Place tomatoes and tomatillos on a foil-lined rimmed baking sheet.
  2. Broil 5 minutes; stir and add serrano pepper to baking sheet. Broil 5 minutes longer or until slightly charred. Cool slightly. Wearing gloves, remove stem and seeds from pepper.
  3. Process, in batches, if necessary, tomatillos, tomatoes, serrano pepper, cilantro, garlic, lime juice, horseradish, hot sauce, Worcestershire, mustard, salt, and cumin until smooth in a blender with center of lid removed so heat can escape.
  4. Transfer tomatillo mixture to a large pitcher. Refrigerate 1 hour or until chilled.
  5. Just before serving, stir in vodka and sparkling mineral water. Fill 6 glasses half full with ice. Top with tomatillo mixture. Garnish, if desired.
